Something in the Water: Why all Gulf Coast cities struggle with their drinking water

Surfside beach, Tx

Here are five reasons why drinking water can present challenges in ALL citites of the Gulf Coast:

  1. Saltwater Intrusion: In coastal areas, saltwater intrusion can occur due to excessive groundwater pumping, causing saltwater to seep into freshwater sources. This makes drinking water sources saline and undrinkable.

  2. Hurricane Impact: Hurricanes and tropical storms are common in the Gulf Coast region, leading to potential contamination of drinking water sources from flooding, storm surges, and sewage overflows.

  3. High Mineral Content: Groundwater in the Gulf Coast region can have high mineral content, making the water taste unpleasant and causing potential health issues if consumed over the long term.

  4. Industrial Pollution: The Gulf Coast is home to numerous industrial activities, including oil refineries and chemical plants. There is a risk of water contamination from industrial spills, leaks, and runoff, posing a threat to drinking water quality.

  5. Algal Blooms: Warm temperatures and nutrient runoff can lead to harmful algal blooms in Gulf Coast waters. These blooms can produce toxins that contaminate drinking water sources, making them unsafe for consumption.

Considering these factors, it is essential to ensure proper water treatment and monitoring measures are in place to safeguard the quality of drinking water along the Gulf Coast.

At The Blue Palm, our water is sourced from a well-water system, as we are on a remote part of the island.

Since we are not on the main water supply with Surfside, it helps us avoid some of the issues listed above. BUT we still have very salinated water levels (since the well is tapping into water so close to the shore).

The water is safe for bathing and washing dishes, but is far too salty for cooking or drinking.

We provide our guests with a Primo Water Dispenser system and fresh 5-gallon water jugs for drinking and cooking water for their stay.
